Virtus - Protecting God's Children

The Safeguard the Children Program is committed to creating a safe environment for all children of our school. Our program provides ongoing support, education, training and resources to help prevent child sexual abuse and to address children's safety in our parish, school and community. Our Lady of the Assumption Parish has an active Safeguard the Children Committee chaired by a parishioner. Other members include the Director of Religious Education, the School Principal, the Pastor and the Youth Minister.

VIRTUS® Protecting God's Children Adult Awareness Session is a three-hour training that helps clergy, staff, volunteers and parents to understand the facts and myths about child sexual abuse and how caring adults can take five important steps to keep children safe. The parent session also stresses monitoring of computers, cell phones and other technology that perpetrators use to gain access to children and young people.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates this training for all adults working with children. All OLA volunteers must read and agree to follow the “Archdiocese of Los Angeles Guidelines for Adults Interacting with Minors at Parish or School Activities or Events.” All volunteers who work with or around children in any way are required to attend a VIRTUS adult awareness training session. In addition to doing Virtus training, anyone who supervises children in any way is required to submit to a background check in the form of livescan by the Los Angeles Archdiocese.

All OLA students take part annually in the “Teaching Touching Safety”
education program. For further information, visit the Safeguard website at www.virtusonline.org .
