GRADUATION: Congratulations to the Class of 2017! Tomorrow, June 7 the grads will be treated to a wonderful lunch at the Parish Center. Later tomorrow evening, the Class of 2017 will have their graduation mass and diploma/awards ceremony in the church, beginning at 5 PM.
ROOF REPLACEMENT PROJECT: OLA Parents, we need your help! Our Lady of the Assumption School has been processing our roof replacement plans with the City of Ventura. One final step before the city can issue the permit is a hearing with the city’s Historical Preservation Committee (HPC). On Wednesday, June 7 at 6:00 PM at Ventura City Hall, the HPC will be considering the roof replacement permit. Once we receive HPC approval we’ll be able to pull the permit and start construction. We are requesting parents to attend the hearing with their students to provide support and testimony at the hearing. As this meeting is so important to starting the re-roof process, we’ll be offering double parent hours to parents that attend the hearing. You can use these hours to complete your 2016/2017 requirement or carry them over to the 2017/2018 school year.
The re-roof project achieves several things that will improve the learning environmental for the students including: lowering the indoor temperature of the school by up to 20 degrees on hot days, bringing the entry and hallway areas into ADA compliance, and installing new LED lighting and improved safety features.

USED UNIFORM SALE: Today is the last day of the annual OLA Used Uniform Sale in the Mulcahy Center. The hall is open for parents to shop today through 3 PM. This is a no-host sale, not a school office sale. Please bring small bills…. the school office cannot provide change. If you have items here for sale, please come back to school this afternoon to pick up unsold items. Dennis and ProForma Uniform will both be here in August to sell new uniform items, This entire last week of school, June 5 – 9, is Non-uniform Dress for all students.
LAST DAYS OF SCHOOL – Thursday, June 8 is the last FULL day of school and the last day for Choice Lunch. It is Karma Day – an afternoon of games and activities. Friday, June 9 is the last day of school. All grades will attend the 8 AM mass on Friday, followed immediately by Academic Awards, distributed in church. Students will then return to their classrooms to receive report cards and say their goodbyes. Dismissal is at 10 AM.

PARISH DONATIONS – If you received a letter reminding you that your 2016 parish donation has not been met in order to qualify for the tuition discount, please come into our school office to take care of this ASAP. This will ensure that we have the proper tuition amount to submit to Smart Tuition. All tuition amounts will be submitted in June.
FULL PAYMENT TUITION OPTION – There is a discount for families who wish to pay full year’s tuition up front. Any family who pays the 2017-2018 tuition in full will receive a $100 per child discount, and the Smart Tuition fee of $50 will be waived. If you wish to take advantage of this option, please let Gina in our office know before the end of the school year.
2016-2017 YEARBOOKS will be distributed today to the children who ordered one. We have a limited number of additional yearbooks, available in our office on a first come-first served basis.
LIBRARY NEWS – All school library books should have been returned to the library by now. If your child still has a book checked out, either the book or payment for a replacement should be brought to our library now.
ATTENTION NEXT YEAR’S 7TH GRADERS AND PARENTS: Whooping cough, also known as Pertussis, continues to threaten students in California. To help stop the spread, California state law requires all incoming 7th graders IN ALL SCHOOLS to show proof of whooping cough booster (Tdap) shot. Students will not be allowed to attend without an updated shot record indicating this immunization. As of January 1, 2016, a personal beliefs exemption is no longer an option for vaccines currently required for entry into school in California. In addition, all immunization requirements for age and grade need to be met prior to the student entering 7th grade.
SUMMER CONSTRUCTION PLANS – This is shaping up to be a busy summer at OLA! Plans call for the replacement of the glass skylight with a roof, replacing the rest of the roof on all buildings (60 years old), and transforming the front entrance with hardscape, landscaping, fencing and security gate. Work will begin on Monday, June 12 and conclude by August 1. All school and parish activities in our buildings have been cancelled for the summer. The school office will have limited hours. We will keep all families informed of progress throughout the summer. A capital campaign is getting under way, and will give our school and parish families an opportunity to pledge and donate to support these projects to benefit our school.
THE NATIONAL GEM-MINERAL-FOSSIL SHOW will take place at the Ventura County Fairgrounds this weekend, Friday – Sunday June 9 – 11. This is presented by the Ventura Gem & Mineral Society and is a great event for families. Lots of great exhibits, demonstrations and kids events will add to the fun! OLA’s VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – will take place once again this summer, from July 17-21, at Holy Cross School. This offers an exciting week of fun activities and prayer. OLA parents and teachers will staff the camp-themed week. See the flyer in today’s envelope to sign up.
KARMA DAY – The room parents from all grades will present Karma Day this Thursday June 8 from 11:30– 2:30pm. We could still use parent volunteers to help out. Any parent hours worked will count toward next year, so you can get a kick start on 2017-2018! If you can help, please contact any room parent from your grade or Janice Force at firstname.lastname@example.org.
OLA IS THE SCHOOL CENTS WINNER! –OLA won (AGAIN) for the 2016-2017 school year! Our school came in First Place, winning gift cards for $2500 which we will use to buy technology items for the students. Many thanks to Christine Renshaw and Gina Ravenscroft for their time and effort to produce this great result for our students.
