OUTDOOR MASS – Our Lady of the Assumption Parish’s OUTDOOR MASS AND PICNIC will take place this Saturday, September 16 on the back lawn of the school, with Mass beginning at 4 PM. This is a wonderful day of prayer and fellowship, not to mention great food and entertainment. We encourage ALL school families to attend. OLA students and many parish ministries will participate in the entrance procession for the mass. RSVP for the mass at the church office or on their website (a link can be found on ours).
Opportunity for Parent Hours: All school families are asked to contribute to this event by bringing a case of 16 oz bottled water. This can be delivered to the school this Thursday or Friday. For every $15 you spend, one parent hour is earned. SPECIAL TRIBUTE: Fr. Leon wishes to especially invite school families and friends who are active military, law enforcement or fire to be a part of our entrance procession, STARTING AT 3:30 PM. Please RSVP so that we will have saved seats for you and your families!
Scholastic Book Fair– Our annual Scholastic Book Fair is all this week, through Fri, Sept 15. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to shop and select books with the guidance of teachers and volunteers. There are hundreds of titles to choose from, at reading levels from Pre-K through 8. This is a proven fundraiser for our school, and OLA will receive a percentage of all sales for our library and classrooms! Each grade has special times to visit the book fair and shop. Parents, stop by after school to shop!
GRANDPARENTS & FRIENDS DAY THIS FRIDAY – This Friday, September 15, we invite all our Grandparents and Friends to join us at school. Join us for school mass at 9:30 AM, and then come over and join us in the classrooms. We will also bless and install our 2017-2018 Student Council officers at the mass. Coffee and rolls for our guests will be compliments of our APA Board. Our Scholastic Book Fair will still be under way, so grandparents may wish to shop for their grandchildren or for the classrooms. It is a Noon Dismissal Day.
HELP FOR TEXAS – Our Lady of the Assumption School and St. Bonaventure HS are teaming up to send help to St. Catherine of Siena School in Port Arthur, Texas. Located in the Diocese of Beaumont, St. Cat’s was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. The entire school, including all classrooms, was under standing water for a couple weeks, and now they are facing extensive cleanup and mold abatement. They are trying to reopen this week, and have given their families the gift of no September tuition. As the principal told us, their families are all struggling. We are still accepting donations and will send all funds received to their paypal account. Please contribute if you would like to help. You can go directly to St. Cat’s website or send your donation in to OLA for us to send to them.

ART TREK – We are still looking for some volunteer docents to help bring art into the classroom! The program features docent training sessions, which are a great time together, and give you the experience of doing your own art…just as your children will do their own art. The Art Trek Staff will teach/train the volunteers. You’ll receive art lesson write-ups, do the art projects, and receive training on effective teaching methods. You can join in a docent/teacher or a classroom helper. No prior teaching or art experience is needed to be an Art Trek Docent! Please contact Renee Arroyo for more information at email@example.com .
PARKING LOT – Thanks to everyone for their cooperation and support of our new system in the parking lot. Please assist us by using the FAMILY VISOR TAG in your car – it will help us identify your vehicle and get your child to you more quickly. Need a second one for grandma or an occasional picker-upper? Pick up an additional one in the office. A couple reminders:
- Please do not drive into the OUT lane of the Dunning driveway. If the pickup lane is not yet moving, be patient. All grades do not come outside in the patio until after 2:45 PM. Every child is picked up and every car filled each day BEFORE 3 PM!
- If you are walking up to pick up your child, please go to the end of the line and respect those waiting ahead of you. Again, the line goes very fast!
LEGO League News – Hey, all LEGO fans!! If you are available on Friday after Grandparents’ Day, we are going to meet in the Computer Lab at 12:15. We would like to take advantage of the half day and have an extended meeting, from 12:15 to 2:30. This way, we can get some programming done, and discuss the project end of the challenge. If you can make it, pack a lunch, and maybe a snack for later, and meet us outside the computer lab. Hope to see you then!
LUNCH HELPERS NEEDED: We are still in need of parents to join us for supervision at lunchtime (12 Noon until 12:45 PM). School staff supervise the lunch tables and play areas, but we can use additional helpers, especially for Kindergarten. It’s a fun way to spend some time with your children and assist us too. Consider coming at lunch ANY SCHOOL DAY. Simply sign in by the office, pick up a Lunch Helpers Guide, wear a name tag, and check in with Pat your first time for some simple directions. Each 45 minute lunch period you are here earns you ONE PARENT HOUR. We ask that all parents assisting at lunch or in a classroom take the Virtus Protecting God’s Children class offered by the parish.
