BACK IN SCHOOL – We are very glad to be back in school after closing for most of last week due to the Thomas Fire. Our students, families and staff are here to support and encourage each other. Thank you to all who have reached out to offer support and assistance to school and parish families displaced and in need. Our OLA Parish is an amazing clearinghouse for help, support and supplies. If you or anyone you know needs help, please let us know or contact our parish at (805)642-7966.
OLA SCHOOL’S JINGLE BELL WALK-A-THON – will take place this Friday, December 15 on a course set up on our field. This is a fun activity and fundraiser for preschool through eighth graders. Students set lap goals based on age and development. Our goal is to help raise $15,000 for our school. We hope that each family will participate to the best of its ability. If each student raises $50, we will achieve our goal! Turn in $50 in pledge money by tomorrow, December 13th to receive non-uniform dress. NOTE: THIS EVENT IS SUBJECT TO AIR QUALITY, WHICH WE ARE MONITORING EACH DAY. FINGERS CROSSED!
STUDENT DESIGN WINNER OF OUR WALKATHON T-SHIRT! Thanks to all the students who turned in beautiful designs for our t-shirt contest. Our winning t-shirt artist is Maisie Hatler, Grade 5. Congratulation, Maisie! Her design will be on the Walkathon t-shirt!
CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE – OLA School and Parish are doing a Toy Drive. Bring your new, unwrapped gift to the collection box at the front door of the school through next week. The program also accepts gift cards to be donated to St. Vincent de Paul. Gift cards may be purchased in our school office.
SOCKS FOR HOMELESS – Our school is also assisting with a Sock Drive sponsored by Many Meals, who will provide the socks to the needy during the holiday season. Please bring in one pair of new socks to school by this Friday, December 15.
BARNES & NOBLE FUNDRAISER –– Our Lady of the Assumption School had a successful fundraiser on December 7. You can still shop online through tonight to benefit our school! Use this code to ensure that OLA is credited: 12275582. All students whose families made purchases either at the evening event or online earn a non-uniform dress day on Monday, December 18. Those who made online purchases should bring a copy of the receipt in to school to get kids checked off. Congratulations to our three raffle winners from December 7: Luke Alatorre, Sophie Reeder and Siena Meter. They each won a B & N gift card!
A CHRISTMAS CAROL FOR KIDS, OLA’s 2017 Christmas Play, will be presented on Tuesday, December 19 in the church, with shows at 1 PM and 6:30 PM. The show is directed by our Music Teacher, Mrs. Cheryl Kewley. All grades from K through 5 will sing and fifth graders have the lead roles. Our Preschoolers will delight us with songs prior to the start of the play. Rehearsals are underway for this exciting show. Today Grades K – 5 are receiving a sheet detailing what each grade should wear.
CHRISTMAS EVE CHILDRENS’ MASS – The OLA Christmas Eve Mass at 4 PM is a special children’s liturgy. Students from our school and the Religious Education program are part of the liturgy and choir. Your families are invited to attend to be a special part of the celebration. We are still in need of families to be greeters at the doors prior to the mass. If this is a mass you will attend, please consider this wonderful opportunity. Check with Mrs. Groff for more information.
PARKING LOT DISMISSAL REMINDERS:
- When the weather calls for it, we will use “rainy day” dismissal after school. Students remain in their classrooms until their name is called. The parent line and student walker line are near the office.
- Do you need an additional visor tag for another one of your vehicles? How about grandma’s car? Stop by our office – we would be glad to provide more tags to families.
- Students who have written permission to walk after school are required to check out each day before leaving. Students who leave without checking out will forfeit the privilege of walking, and will be required to have an adult check them out.
SPORTS NEWS: Due to the fires and resulting air quality, we will postpone the start of our basketball practices until further notice. Our Fall Sports Banquet to honor our Volleyball and Flag Football student-athletes has been rescheduled for Tuesday, January 16 at 6 PM in Mulcahy Center.
BOXTOPS – Our next BoxTop collection day will be in January. Keep collecting over the holidays!
SCRIP NEWS – Holiday shopping is easier when you use OLA Scrip! Use the convenience of our office to purchase gift cards for restaurants, Starbuck’s, Von’s, Smart & Final, fast foods and more. Our school earns money for every sale of scrip. Scrip is available during office hours Mon- Fri. Holiday scrip orders placed by THIS AFTERNOON may be picked up by December 22! Remember that every $200 purchase of scrip = 1 parent hour.
