News Notes for May 1, 2018

We celebrate our Blessed Mother during her month of May.  Our May Crowning Liturgy, First Holy Communions and Confirmations  all take place in May.  Join our students for the praying of the Living Rosary, this Friday, May 4 at 11:30 AM around the beautiful statue on the front school patio.  This will be a noon dismissal day.

Mother-Son Bowling Event – We had a great time on Sunday at Buena Lanes. High scorers were Matthew Jones (6) and Jose Hurtado (K).Thank you to Mrs. Inez Byars for putting this event together!


Non-Uniform Dress Reminder – Parents and students, please review the non-uniform dress guidelines, found online in our handbook. Modesty is the guide, and note that very short shorts are not appropriate and tight pants may not be worn. Leggings and jeggings are not appropriate for school if worn as pants, without a dress or longer top over. When in doubt, err on the side of modesty! Check with your child’s teacher or our office if you have any questions.


FIRST HOLY COMMUNION – Our second graders and other students will make their First Holy Communion on Saturday, May 12 at 10 AM.


SAVE THE DATE …VACATION BIBLE CAMP! Dates: July 9 – 13. Location: OLA Mulcahy Center. Our Lady of the Assumption Church invites you to put smiles on children’s faces and God in their hearts through this year’s Vacation Bible Camp (VBC). We are looking for individuals of all ages, including middle school and high school students, who may be available to share their gifts in support of this year’s VBC! There are many places to serve and help. VBC reaches so many children and families each summer and through you we can continue that reach this year. We need you! Interested? CHECK OUT THE OLA WEBSITE! Our school website was recently upgraded and still located at The new site has additional features to better serve current families and also those checking out our school. We encourage all OLA parents to subscribe to the assignments for your child’s teacher(s) and to explore the features of our site.


CHRISTMAS SHOW DVDS! DVDs from our OLA Christmas Show “A Christmas Carol”, starring our students in January, 2018, are still available for purchase in the school office. The price is $5 each. Many thanks to Giang Nguyen and Adam Janis for their work in recording, editing and assembling these for our families!


GET A PERSONALIZED PAVER FOR YOUR FAMILY ON OUR SCHOOL PLAZA – We invite all school families and alumni to consider a donation to the new plaza at the front of the school. Information and naming opportunities went home a few weeks ago. This beautiful space has added safety and beauty to the school entrance, and provides space for prayer, instruction and gathering for social events. There are opportunities for donating to this project, including numerous opportunities to give, from pavers to fencing and entrances. This is a chance to invest in the school and have your family and childrens’ names on pavers to always be at the school. Please consider a gift in memory of a relative, school graduate or grandparent.


RELAY FOR LIFE – Saturday, May 5 at Buena HS!     OLA Parish and School are once again participating in this great event. Use the pledge sheets sent home last week to get pledges and sign up to walk. We need student walkers and parent volunteers to join the team! On Saturday, May 5 the parish will participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event at the Buena High School soccer field. Walkers are needed between 12 noon – 5 PM. There will be games, food, music and lots of fun activities. Parent Hours are available for volunteers. For more information, contact Rochida McClure at (805)746-0727.


VILLANOVA SUMMER LEADERSHIP CAMP – Villanova Prep will be hosting a summer leadership academy from June 28 – July 26 for entering 7th and 8th grade students. This is a chance to live for four weeks in the residence halls, make new friends, take academic courses, engage in leadership development, and join in exciting off-campus weekly trips. There are brochures in the school office to sign up. There are scholarship opportunities available to reduce the cost. Ask Mrs. Groff if interested.



  1. Please continue to use your visor tag. These are so helpful to us when we are trying to quickly identify your car and get your child’s name called, even more so on a rainy day. If you need an additional tag we would be glad to provide one for you.
  2. Students stand on the patio with their class and listen for their name to be called.
  3. Parents and grandparents who walk up to the gate to pick up your child after school are asked to please line up in order to keep the dismissal orderly, quick and safe for our students.


SPORTS NEWS:                  The Sports Banquet honoring our Girls and Boys Basketball teams will take place tonight at 6 PM in Mulcahy Center.


Box Tops for Education Update – The last boxtop collection for this school year will take place on Tuesday, May 15. Don’t forget to save your Box Tops over the summer!


SCRIP NEWS –Use the convenience of our office to purchase gift cards for restaurants, Starbuck’s, Von’s, Smart & Final, fast foods and more. Our school earns money for every sale of scrip. Scrip is available during office hours Mon- Fri. Remember that every $200 purchase of scrip = 1 parent hour.

We still have a large supply of $100 Target gift cards. Stop by and purchase some before you go shopping!
