Our Lady of the Assumption

News Notes for October 16, 2018

Family Movie Night - Our Moana Movie night is just under 3 weeks away!!!  We hope to have a huge turnout again on Saturday, November 3rd on the back lawn of OLA School.  Please don't delay in placing your food order as we need to provide the BBQ Lead with an accurate food count.  Complete the order forms and turn them into the office right away!!   Thanks!

SNACK SHACK: As part of the good eats at Movie Night, we will have a Snack Shack with movie snack goodies for purchase. We ask every family in grades K – 7 to donate $5 toward the Snack Shack. If you have not already done so, please send this in to the office. Grade 8 will also sponsor and run a baked goods booth.

Raffle Tickets: Every family is responsible for 20 raffle tickets ($40 total) for the Movie Night, for which your student gets one chance in our iPad drawing. You may purchase these yourself or sell them. For every additional 5 raffle tickets sold, the student gets an additional chance in the raffle.

Would you like to have your children sell raffle tickets after a Sunday mass? Father Leon has given our students the okay to sell at the exit doors of the church or at a table at Friendship Sunday after masses October 27-28, after each of the masses: 5:15 PM Saturday and 8 AM, 9:30 AM, 11 AM and 5:15 PM Sunday. They may choose to sell after mass outside one of the church doors or at a table in Mulcahy Center. Students wear their school uniform, and bring their own tickets, change, extra tickets from the school office (GET IN OUR OFFICE AHEAD OF TIME). Parent volunteers are welcome to come also and may earn parent hours.  Sign up sheets are on the counter in the school office for a maximum of 7 students per mass.

STUDENT ENTERTAINMENT AT MOVIE NIGHT- Dance Instructor Lyndsay Roark is teaching interested students a routine to tunes from our movie Moana. Signup sheets for students to be a part of this were sent home last week. The practices are during school time and the students will perform on November 3 prior to the movie.

OLA-ST. BONAVENTURE GOLF TOURNAMENTMONDAY, NOVEMBER 5 - Get your foursome together and make plans to join us for the second annual OLA-St. Bonaventure Golf Tournament on Monday, November 5 at the Saticoy Country Club. WE NEED GOLFERS! We are extending the Early Bird rate of $175 to this Friday, October 19. Volunteers are also needed for the day of the event. To sign up, go to the OLA website which links you to the entry form on the St. Bonaventure HS website. This is a great way to earn lots of parent hours. If you have any questions, please contact Gina Ravenscroft in our school office.

TRICK OR TREAT SO OTHERS CAN EAT – OLA is joining with St. Bonaventure High School and their Student Leadership Team to do a food collection timed to Halloween. Starting next week, we will have collection bins in every classroom, and students are invited to bring non-perishable goods (cans, dried food, rice, beans, etc). The collecting can also be done while trick-or-treating. All donations will be given to Catholic Charities of Ventura, who feeds the needy year-round. St. Bonaventure will do a pizza party for the class bringing in the most food by Thursday, November 1.

GREAT AMERICAN SHAKE-OUT – OCTOBER 18 - Our Lady of the Assumption School will participate in a nationwide event, the Great American Shake-Out, this Thursday, October 18. We will prepare the students and discuss this in advance. We will then do an earthquake preparedness drill.

HALLOWEEN IS COMING… Halloween, Wednesday, October 31 will be a Noon Dismissal day, with the annual Pumpkin Bowl, a 7th vs. 8th Co-ed Kickball game played at 11 AM. The winning class will be awarded the fantastic Pumpkin Bowl trophy for their classroom (currently owned by grade 8).

All students may wear a Halloween costume to school, or may come in orange & black non-uniform dress.   Guidelines for Costumes: We ask parents to support us in keeping our elementary school celebration of Halloween simple and enjoyable for all. No scary or inappropriate costumes or props may be worn or brought. No masks or face makeup. These do not work at school! Any accessory brought to go with a costume must be appropriate for school – no weapons – and will only be taken out for the special Halloween Activity (sponsored by Student Council), which will be at 8:00 AM. Our lower grades will walk to nearby convalescent homes to “scare” and entertain the guests. Following the kickball game, popsicles will be served to all students.

PARKING LOT REMINDERS - If you park and walk in, be sure to use the crosswalk to walk your child across the lanes.     Morning drivers, please do not stop and let children out in the drive lane of the parking lot. Our valet lane moves quickly and is safer for our children. A growing number of students whose parents have designated them as “walkers” after school leave the school area to walk to the front of the church to wait. At least once a day, our office gets reports of one or more of those students seen fooling around, walking around the lot or back to the school…parents didn’t arrive yet, talking to friends, forgot a book, etc. The front of the church is a not supervised area and we do not recommend that parents have their children wait there.

UCLA I’m Going To College Event – We have FREE tickets available for this annual event…join us and go to the UCLA vs. Arizona State football game on Saturday, October 20 with kickoff at 7:30 PM at the Rose Bowl. Contact Gina Ravenscroft in our school office to get your FREE tickets.

Makeup Picture Day – will be Friday, October 26.

NAMING OPPORTUNITIES ON OUR SCHOOL PLAZA – We invite all school families and alumni to consider a donation to the school plaza. There are still opportunities for donating to this project, including numerous opportunities to give. This is a chance to invest in the school and have your family and childrens’ names on pavers to always be at the school. Please consider a gift in memory of a relative, school graduate or grandparent.

SPORTS NEWS:                  The OLA Flag Football and Volleyball seasons are in full swing. Games and practices continue each week. Check out the Athletics calendar tab on our website to view the entire game schedule.

Box Tops for Education Collection –Thanks to all students who brought in their BoxTops for today’s drawing. Congratulations to our October raffle winner, Preschooler Emma Casillas. Keep clipping and saving those Box Tops. The next drawing will be on Tuesday, November 13.
