OLA-ST. BONAVENTURE GOLF TOURNAMENTMONDAY, NOVEMBER 5 - Get your foursome together and make plans to join us for the second annual OLA-St. Bonaventure Golf Tournament on Monday, November 5 at the Saticoy Country Club. THERE IS STILL TIME TO SIGN UP TO PLAY! To sign up, go to the OLA website which links you to the entry form on the St. Bonaventure HS website.

PARENT CONFERENCES – Last week, sign-up sheets were sent home for upcoming parent conferences. Our school schedules four noon dismissal days for the purpose of conferences: November 15, 16, 19 and 20. Please indicate your preferred times and return it by today. Teachers make every effort to coordinate siblings’ conference times. Your child’s teacher will then send back to you a conference appointment time.

TRICK OR TREAT SO OTHERS CAN EAT – OLA is joining with St. Bonaventure High School and their Student Leadership Team to do a food collection timed to Halloween. This week, St. Bonaventure Leadership Team students have brought over collection bins for each of our classrooms, and our students are asked to bring non-perishable goods (cans, dried food, rice, beans, etc). The collecting can also be done while trick-or-treating. All donations will be given to Catholic Charities of Ventura, who feeds the needy year-round. St. Bonaventure will do a pizza party for the class bringing in the most food by Thursday, November 1.

HALLOWEEN IS COMING… TOMORROW, Halloween, Wednesday, October 31 will be a Noon Dismissal day, with the annual Pumpkin Bowl, a 7th vs. 8th Co-ed Kickball game played at 11 AM. The winning class will be awarded the fantastic Pumpkin Bowl trophy for their classroom (currently owned by grade 8).

All students may wear a Halloween costume to school, or may come in orange & black non-uniform dress.   Guidelines for Costumes: We ask parents to support us in keeping our elementary school celebration of Halloween simple and enjoyable for all. No scary or inappropriate costumes or props may be worn or brought. No masks or face makeup. These do not work at school! Any accessory brought to go with a costume must be appropriate for school – no weapons – and will only be taken out for the special Halloween Activity (sponsored by Student Council), which will be at 8:00 AM. Our lower grades will walk to nearby convalescent homes to “scare” and entertain the guests. Following the kickball game, popsicles will be served to all students.

LOT REMINDERS - If you park and walk in, be sure to use the crosswalk to walk your child across the lanes.     Morning drivers, please do not stop and let children out in the drive lane of the parking lot. Our valet lane moves quickly and is safer for our children. A growing number of students whose parents have designated them as “walkers” after school leave the school area to walk to the front of the church to wait. At least once a day, our office gets reports of one or more of those students seen fooling around, walking around the lot or back to the school…parents didn’t arrive yet, talking to friends, forgot a book, etc. The front of the church is a not supervised area and we do not recommend that parents have their children wait there.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Icon Visits OLA Today our students had the wonderful opportunity to see a rare religious icon, visiting our parish today through November 1.  This year La Peregrina, a pilgrim image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, is visiting OLA again as part of the annual pilgrimage to parishes in the five regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.  La Peregrina is an exact digital reproduction of the original image in Mexico City’s Basilica, which has been blessed and touched to the original image and blessed by St. John Paul II. We have a chance to join in prayer and fellowship as we entrust our OLA family to her loving intercession.  Our students went over to the church today for a special prayer service. The images will still be in our church during the school mass on the holy day on November 1.

SAVE THE DATE: Our Lady of the Assumption School will host a Poker Tournament on Saturday, December 1 in Mulcahy Center, starting at 5:30 PM. The cost is $60, which includes entrance, dinner, poker chips and a drink ticket. Plan to join in the fun! A flyer with all the details is in today’s envelope.

NAMING OPPORTUNITIES ON OUR SCHOOL PLAZA – We invite all school families and alumni to consider a donation to the school plaza. There are still opportunities for donating to this project, including numerous opportunities to give. This is a chance to invest in the school and have your family and childrens’ names on pavers to always be at the school. Please consider a gift in memory of a relative, school graduate or grandparent.

SPORTS NEWS:                  The OLA Flag Football and Volleyball seasons continue. Games and practices continue each week. Check out the Athletics calendar tab on our website to view the entire game schedule.
