Our Lady of the Assumption

News Notes for December 4, 2018

THE SEASON OF ADVENT – has begun. Advent is a four week time of prayer and preparation for the birth of Jesus. At school, all our classes have an Advent wreath, say special prayers and focus on the true reason for this season. Several service opportunities help us think of others…especially the toy drive, the canned food collection and the lotion drive. Details for those are below. How are you celebrating Advent in your family? Our parish office has prayer booklets (free) as well as Advent wreaths to purchase. Lighting the candle and saying the Advent prayers each evening is a wonderful family activity. Saturday, December 8 is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass times are Friday at 5:30 PM (vigil) and Saturday at 8 and 9:30 AM and 5:15 PM.

OLA’s CHRISTMAS PROGRAM, THE MYSTERY OF SIMON SHEPHERD, will be presented this Thursday, December 6 in the church, with shows at 1 PM and 6:30 PM. The show is directed by our Music Teacher, Mrs. Cheryl Kewley. All grades from K through 5 will sing and fifth graders have the lead roles. Our Preschoolers will delight us with songs prior to the start of the play.

BARNES & NOBLE FUNDRAISER -– Our Lady of the Assumption School will have an all-day fundraiser at our local Barnes & Noble THIS Friday, December 7. B & N will donate a percentage of all proceeds to our school. By using our school code (green coupon coming home today) and making a purchase, your student will earn a non-uniform dress day (Monday, Dec. 10)! Special events begin at 3 PM and continue through 7 PM with Polar Express Storytime. Your online purchases through December 12 also benefit the school. PURCHASE BARNES & NOBLE SCRIP HERE IN ADVANCE TO BENEFIT THE SCHOOL!

SCHOOL FUNDRAISER NIGHT AT URBANE CAFÉ – Also on this Friday, December 7, plan to eat at Urbane Café, located in the same shopping center as Barnes & Noble, then come over to the bookstore. Combine your eating and shopping to benefit our school!

CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE – OLA School and Parish are again collecting new toys to donate during the Christmas season. There are collection boxes in the school and in the church. To give a push to this special event, we invite our students to join our Student Council as we STUFF MRS. BALOYO’S CAR on Friday, December 14. Bring your new, unwrapped toy to school that morning and our Student Council officers will fill Mrs. B’s car from 7:30 – 8 AM! The program also accepts gift cards to be donated to St. Vincent de Paul. Gift cards may be purchased in our school office.

THOMAS FIRE DINNER – Today is the one year anniversary of the Thomas fire, and we continue to pray for the victims of this devastating event in our community. Our church is hosting a Thomas Fire Memorial Mass and Dinner tonight, Tuesday, December 4 beginning at 5:15 PM.  The dinner will take place at the Mulcahy Center following the 5:15 PM mass.  We need help in the following:

Serving: 6:00PM – 8:00PM

All are invited to bring in any size new bottles of lotion (samples and extras welcome) to the collection box in the school hallway by December 15.

NAMING OPPORTUNITIES ON OUR SCHOOL PLAZA – We invite all school families and alumni to consider a donation to the school plaza. There are still opportunities for donating to this project, including numerous opportunities to give. This is a chance to invest in the school and have your family and childrens’ names on pavers to always be at the school. Please consider a gift in memory of a relative, school graduate or grandparent.
