Our Lady of the Assumption

News Notes for December 11, 2018

THE SEASON OF ADVENT – continues into the second week as we prepare for the birth of Jesus. At school, all our classes light the Advent wreath, say special prayers and focus on the true reason for this season. Our service projects include the toy drive, the canned food collection and the lotion drive. Details for those are below. How are you celebrating Advent in your family? Lighting the advent wreath candles and saying the Advent prayers each evening is a wonderful family activity.

“It’s Christmas Time” Ballet – Please join us for our holiday recital, presented by OLA Ballet (After School Ballet Program). Our dancers are directed by Mrs. Lyndsay Roark. It will take place on Friday, December 14 at 6:30 pm in the Mulcahy Center. We ask that all attending our performance contribute to our efforts to donate to the Many Meals program. In lieu of ticket sales, we ask anyone in attendance to please bring: 1 (new) bottle of LOTION - per two person entry. We look forward to a wonderful showcase sharing all the students hard work and sharing the message of Faith, Hope and Love that Christmas time brings!

THE MYSTERY OF SIMON SHEPHERD – was presented last Thursday. Congratulations to our students, especially grade 5, for an outstanding job. Thank you to Mrs. Kewley for leading and directing the entire production.

BARNES & NOBLE FUNDRAISER -– Our Lady of the Assumption School had a great turnout last Friday evening at the store. It was great to see so many of our families there. So far our school has netted over $900 from the sales! You can still help our school by making your online purchase by tomorrow, Wednesday. Be sure to use our Bookfair Code: 12393039.

CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE – OLA School and Parish are again collecting new toys to donate during the Christmas season. There are collection boxes in the school and in the church. To give a push to this special event, we invite our students to join our Student Council as we STUFF MRS. BALOYO’S CAR this Friday, December 14. Bring your new, unwrapped toy to school that morning and our Student Council officers will fill Mrs. B’s car from 7:45 – 8 AM! The program also accepts gift cards to be donated to St. Vincent de Paul. Gift cards may be purchased in our school office.

CANNED FOOD NEEDED – NON-UNIFORM DRESS – Each OLA student is invited to bring two (2) cans of vegetables or two (2) cans of fruit next Tuesday, December 18 to add to the OLA Parish Food Baskets. Students who bring in the canned goods have a Non-Uniform Dress that day.

LOTION FOR MANY MEALS – Our school is assisting with a “lotion” drive sponsored by Many Meals, who will provide them to the needy during the holiday season. All are invited to bring in any size new bottles of lotion (samples and extras welcome) to the collection box in the school hallway by this Friday, December 14.

SCHOOL UNIFORM NOTE: As the weather has become cooler, students are wearing outerwear to school over their uniforms. Note that for students in K-8, all clothing must be uniform. Non-uniform jackets and other apparel are not okay. Our office sells crewneck sweatshirts year-round, as well as PE clothes. If you wish to order some warmer clothing, there are links on our school website to Dennis Uniform (sweatshirts, quarter-zips, sweaters) and Proforma (two styles of jackets). Check with us in the office if you have uniform questions.

Christmas Recess – Wednesday, December 19 will be our last day of school in December. It will be a Noon Dismissal day, and we will have Christmas activities in the morning. All students have “Christmas” Non-Uniform Dress (free). Our Christmas Recess extends through January 4, with school resuming on Monday, January 7.

NAMING OPPORTUNITIES ON OUR SCHOOL PLAZA – We invite all school families and alumni to consider a donation to the school plaza. There are still opportunities for donating to this project, including numerous opportunities to give. This is a chance to invest in the school and have your family and childrens’ names on pavers to always be at the school. Please consider a gift in memory of a relative, school graduate or grandparent.

SPORTS NEWS:   The end of season Fall Sports Banquet will be held tonight at 6 PM. Practices for Boys and Girls Basketball are starting this week and next.
