Mandatory Auction Donation Reminder – At the beginning of the school year, the APA Board sent home a summary of planned fundraising activities for the 2018 - 2019 year. As you know, our annual dinner auction is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We depend on EVERY school family fulfilling their minimum (and mandatory) obligations of selling at least 10 raffle tickets AND donating at least $25 to purchase gift cards. Kindly drop off your donations to Mrs. Ravenscroft in the office, as we are recording as families fulfill their obligation. And of course, we hope to see you at our “Bon Voyage” Dinner Auction event on March 30.
SPELLING BEE – OLA’s top spellers in grades 4 – 8 competed last Friday in our school Spelling Bee. Everyone did a great job, and the competition went many rounds. Our school winner is 8th grader Noelle Villasenor. Our runner-up is 7th grader Jack Pankratz. Noelle will represent our school at the Ventura County Spelling Bee at Cal State Channel Islands on March 2. Congratulations!
SCHOOL UNIFORM NOTE: As the weather has become cooler, students are wearing outerwear to school over their uniforms. Note that for students in K-8, all clothing worn at school must be uniform. Non-uniform jackets, raincoats and other apparel are not allowed. Our office sells crewneck sweatshirts year-round, as well as PE clothes. If you wish to order some warmer clothing, there are links on our school website to Dennis Uniform (sweatshirts, quarter-zips, sweaters) and Proforma (two styles of jackets, including a hooded rain jacket). Please be sure to put your child’s name in all their school uniform items. Check with us in the office if you have uniform questions. Note: Dennis Uniform is offering 15% off all purchases and free shipping through the end of January. Both uniform companies have links on our website.
The OLA Dinner Raffle Committee needs YOU! Our Dinner Auction will take place on Saturday, March 30. We are looking for 2 or 3 people who would be willing to help out with the planning and execution of the raffle which accompanies the annual Dinner Auction and Fundraiser. The Raffle timing is approximately 8 weeks prior to the auction. We are hoping to make the raffle different and more exciting this year for the students and we'd love to have YOUR input. NEW STUDENT APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2019 - 2020 SCHOOL YEAR - Please invite any friends who are considering our school to go online and apply for admission soon. Some grades will have a waiting list for next year. NOTE: If you have a sibling whom you wish to attend OLA, YOU MUST APPLY NOW! This especially applies to Kindergarten. Tuition Discount for Referring A Friend! The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has launched a Parent Referral Program. You and the referral will receive $100 off tuition for each referral that results in a new enrollment at a Catholic School. There is also a drawing for an iPad for referrals. SCIENCE FAIR HELP WANTED – The STEM/Science Fair (for students in grades 6-8) is coming soon and this makes for a great opportunity to earn Parent Hours…. whether your child is in middle school or younger. We are in need of volunteer judges and WE WANT YOU! No experience or special training required! The Science Fair will be on Thursday, January 31 from 9 AM until 2:30 PM. Mother-Son Bowling Event – Moms and sons, get ready to strike up some fun! OLA will host a Mother-Son Bowling Event on Sunday, February 24 at 1 PM at Harley’s Camarillo Bowl.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK – JANUARY 27 – FEBRUARY 1 Our Lady of the Assumption School joins in this annual of Catholic education across the country. PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN – All schools and religious ed programs in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are required to provide abuse prevention lessons to children each year. The program we use is called “Empowering God’s Children”, provided to us by Virtus. This year’s lessons focus on Boundaries and Bullying. Mrs. Groff is the instructor for the lessons, which will be done in each classroom in February. Please sign and return the permission slip that is going home today. Kindergarten parents are also receiving a Parent Guide. We have additional copies as well as an Overview of the program in the office for anyone else who would like one. “JUST AS I AM” Hymns Tour - The African Children’s Choir will perform at OLA Parish on Saturday, February 2 at 7:15 PM. This is FREE concert with an opportunity for a goodwill offering. Preceding the peformance, a spaghetti dinner will be served in Mulcahy Ceter at $7 per plate.
BALLET - Happy New Year OLA Families! Mrs. Lyndsay Roark after school ballet teacher and OLA MOM if offering a new session for Winter/Spring ballet classes! Two sessions are being offered:
Session 1 Begins 2/6-4/3 and Session 2 Starting 4/10-5/29. Dancers may choose to participate in one or both sessions depending. Dancers will finish off our season this year with a wonderful collection of works to be performed for friends and family members held in Mulcahy Center Saturday June 1st at 1:00 pm. New Students are always welcome! Information meeting will be held next week January 30th directly following school dismissal in Mulcahy Center. Forms will be available for registration and can be picked up in the office beginning Wednesday the 23rd.
NAMING OPPORTUNITIES ON OUR SCHOOL PLAZA – We invite all school families and alumni to consider a donation to the school plaza. There are still opportunities for donating to this project, including numerous opportunities to give. This is a chance to invest in the school and have your family and childrens’ names on pavers to always be at the school. Please consider a gift in memory of a relative, school graduate or grandparent.
SPORTS NEWS: Our boys and girls basketball teams begin games this week. Scheduled games can be found on our website (Athletic Calendar tab) and there is also a copy of the schedules on the office bulletin board.
Box Tops for Education Collection – Thanks for your ongoing support of our Boxtop collection. All your student has to do is: (1) TRIM excess packaging, (2) CHECK that the product code and expiration date are legible, (3) ATTACH the Box Tops to the Collection Sheet (there will be a new one for January)...glue or clear tape only, please! (No staples.) Every Collection Sheet turned in equals ONE entry in a drawing for $10 in Scrip Cards. Bring two or more sheets and increase your chances to win! Our next collection day will be Tuesday, February 12.
