Tuesday of the Fourth Week of EastertideSt. Athanasius, doctor of the Church

Saint of the Day: St Athanasius

Acts 11:19-26. All you nations, praise the Lord – Psalm 86(87):1-7. John 10:22-30.

How are we perceived by others?

The first reading today asks us to think about trust. There is a group of people who have escaped persecution. We can just imagine the trauma they carried with them. We probably know people ourselves who have lived through some ordeal and have managed to escape. They might be refugees or they may have moved on from a destructive relationship. They are often tentative as they start to rebuild. It is not easy for those who have been hurt to trust again.

In Antioch, this group meets Barnabas who has come from Jerusalem, seemingly to check on them. This could have gone badly. But it doesn’t. The reason is simple. The persecuted can see that Barnabas is ‘a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit’. Think for a minute how this might have come across. Was he a listener? Non-judgmental? Kind? Let’s ask ourselves if people we meet today, especially those who need healing, will experience us in the same way.

The Character Issue: Diligence - SLO Classical Academy

Virtue for the Month of May is ~ Diligence

Doing your best and working hard until you are finished.

Diligence may be described as an attitude exhibiting constant and earnest effort to accomplish what has been undertaken, regardless of the circumstances surrounding a person. Properly defined, diligence is careful and  persistent effort.

Three ways to Pursue Happiness Through Work:

Growing our Diligence

Sanctification of Work:  Our work is a gift offered to God. Our goal is to perform and finish work well for the love of God in union with Christ~ Are we sanctifying our work? Is it done for the love of God?

Sanctifying oneself in work: Church says: Work can be a means of sanctification and collaboration with Christ for the salvation of others ~ Are we sanctifying ourselves  in work? Are we becoming Christ like?

Sanctifying others through work: Holiness is a universal call. We give good examples in our work by manifesting professionalism, integrity, loyalty, and friendliness. ~ Are we sanctifying others through our work? Are we bringing Christ to others?

Our Saints this month:

Grade PK- 2: St. Andre Bessette “ Put yourself in God’s hands; He abandons no one.”

Grade 3 - 5: St. Francis de Sales “Have patience with all things, But, first of all with yourself.”
