From the Desk of the Principal…September 8 , 2025

What a Wonderful Week at OLA!

This past week has been filled with so many blessings and joyful moments in our community.

Our Student Council Induction Mass was a beautiful celebration! A heartfelt thank you to our first grade class and student council for leading so well, and to Mrs. Bayolo and Mrs. Devericks for all of your hard work behind the scenes. Fr. Daniel shared a wonderful homily that truly set the tone for the day and provided the perfect beginning to our Grandparents & Special Friends Day.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day was such a success! Thank you Parent volunteers, our APA Board and Teachers. The activities you planned brought so much joy and created lasting memories for our students and their families. Thank you for your creativity and care in making the day so meaningful.

The Scholastic Book Fair also enjoyed a successful week, culminating beautifully with the Grandparents Day celebration. Thank you, Mrs. Rose, Mrs. Fernandez, Mrs. Cruz, and Mrs. , and all who worked to make this event such a success.

This week we also rejoice in the life of the Church! On September 8th, we celebrated the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, giving thanks for her faithful “yes” and asking her to guide our school community. And on Sunday, Pope Francis canonized two new saints who inspire our young people and all of us by their lives of holiness and joy—St. Carlo Acutis and St. Pier Giorgio Frassati. May their examples encourage our students to live lives of faith, service, and love.

What a wonderful reminder that OLA is a place where faith, family, and learning come together in such meaningful ways.

Week 23 in Ordinary Time

St Peter Claver; Blessed Frederick Ozanam

Colossians 2:6-15. The Lord is compassionate to all his creatures – Ps 144(145):1-2, 8-11. Luke 6:12-19.

Lord, what task have you in mind for me?

The reading from Paul’s letter to the Colossians today offers an insightful reflection on the life of St Peter Claver, whom we celebrate today. ‘As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith.’ In Claver’s time in the 16th century, black people were bought and enslaved by wealthy interests in the Old World. Colombia was a centre of this slave trade and Claver, a Spanish Jesuit, spent 40 years there working among them, teaching them that their dignity, and ours, is rooted and built up in our belonging to Christ.

The Gospel today is Luke’s version of the selection of the twelve apostles. The Lord is still selecting apostles in our day. Has he got a task in mind for me? Claver is the patron saint of slaves, and of Colombia.

Virtue of the Month

Hope is a gift from God by which we trust in Jesus Christ—that He will keep His promises and help us through the difficulties of our journey to Heaven.

Hope responds to the deep desire for happiness which God has placed in every human heart. It is not just optimism, but something much greater. As Scripture reminds us: “Hope does not disappoint.” (Romans 5:5)
