From the Desk of the Principal... October 22nd, 2025

Dear OLA Families,

Members of our Student Council recently participated in the Missionary Childhood Association (MCA) Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels, alongside students from other diocesan schools. We were in the processional of schools. It was a beautiful celebration, with Archbishop Jose Gomez as the main celebrant and Monsignor Terrance Fleming concelebrating along with our Fr. Daniel Vega! This special MCA Youth Appreciation Mass highlighted the mission and joy of children uniting in faith and mission.

We are proud to share that OLA reached our Raffle Ticket Sales goal! For our students, this means wonderful incentives to celebrate their efforts. Contributions like these support the ongoing vitality of our school and help fund campus improvements.

For more information, be sure to check our the Raffle Update section of our News Notes.

Week 29 in Ordinary Time

St John Paul II

Romans 6:12-18. Our help is in the name of the Lord – Ps 123(124). Luke 12:39-48.

Balance point

The history of Christian thought about the immanence of the end times is fascinating. Today it is easy to deride those who become fixated on Christ’s immanent return. We’ve all seen some adopt Byzantine theorizing and find all sorts of incredible secret codes in the Bible. These routine predictions, their consequences and their failure have all been harmful to the Christian witness. This area of thought is particularly odd given Jesus’ clarity on these matters being unknown to us. On the other hand, when we think of the institutional failures of Church leaders, it is clear what happens when we are not mindful of our forthcoming judgment. There is a balance here. Searching the pages of Daniel for hidden meaning is unhelpful, and likely spiritually harmful. So too is a failure to look to the Master’s return, especially when those forgetting have been ‘set over his household’.

📚Virtue of the Month: Studiousness

Seeking knowledge to grow closer to truth~

Each of us has a natural desire for knowledge. Study is the keen application of the mind to truth. It is the way we feed our God-given hunger for understanding. Because this desire is placed within us by God, study is not only valuable - it is part of our lifelong search for happiness.

Unless we apply our minds to truth,, we will never by truly happy. The goal of study is contemplation, a holy practice in which we yearn for and participate in the happiness that is God Himself. Even our earthly contemplation is a step toward eternal union with Him.

This month, our classrooms will walk with saints who modeled studiousness:

  • St. Albert the Great (TK-2): A brilliant teacher who loved both science and theology, reminding us that all knowledge points back to God.

  • St. Thomas Aquinas (Grades 3-5) : One of the Church's greatest thinkers, who showed that faith and reason work together to lead us to truth.

  • St. Edith Stein (Grades 6-8): A philosopher who sought truth all her life, ultimately finding it in Christ and giving her life for Him.

As we learn from these saints, may we also grow in the virtue of studiousness - seeking truth with open hearts and minds.

Prayer: Lord, You are the source of all truth. Bless our studies this month so that, like the saints, we may use our minds and hearts to draw closer to You. May our love of learning lead us always to a deeper love of You. Amen.
