November with pumpkins, leaves, and books

From the Desk of the Principal......November 4, 2025

Happy November!

As we move deeper into fall and begin the transition toward winter, we notice subtle signs of change—even here in California. While we may not see the vivid transformation of leaves that other states enjoy, we do feel cooler mornings and shorter days. With daylight savings time behind us, I hope everyone enjoyed that extra hour of rest!

November holds deep meaning for us as Catholics. It is known as the Month of Remembrance, a time when we honor and pray for all souls who have gone before us. We began this month with the beautiful celebrations of All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). Throughout this sacred month, we are invited to reflect on the gift of eternal life and the hope we have in Christ’s promise of heaven.

This week, we were blessed to gather for our Second Grade Mass, which was absolutely wonderful. The students led us in prayer with reverence and joy, helping our school community enter more deeply into this month’s spirit of faith and remembrance.

As we continue through November, let us hold close the spirit of gratitude that this season brings. In our classrooms, on the playground, and within our homes, may we find daily reminders of God’s goodness and the blessings that surround us. I am deeply thankful for our wonderful students, dedicated staff, and supportive families who make our OLA community such a special place.

Menu for a happy Christian life

Weddings and banquets take a lot of planning. Ask anyone who has had to figure out who would be willing to sit next to the grumpy old uncle who would rather be at home watching TV anyway. It’s no wonder that the man in today’s parable is upset when last-minute apologies start arriving, especially from someone who is more interested in oxen. But isn’t that the point? We are all full of excuses. We are endlessly distracted, sometimes by things that seem to demand instant attention. As someone said, we have forgotten how to distinguish between the urgent and the important. The poor, the crippled and the lame seem to understand better. St Paul’s Letter to the Romans is itself a banquet. In a few lines, today’s passage presents the whole menu for a happy Christian life: cheerfulness, hope, work, kindness, empathy, hospitality and grace. Every line asks us to look in the mirror for a moment. Does our faith influence the way we live?

  • November Virtues Flyer

word Humility with wild flowers Virtue of the Month: Humility
Accepting your limitations and God-given talents

Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues. It allows us to see ourselves truthfully—as God sees us—without pride or false modesty. To be humble is to recognize both our strengths and our weaknesses, knowing that every gift we have is a blessing from God, given not for our glory but for His.

When we practice humility, we become more open to learning, to serving others, and to loving as Christ loves. Humility frees our hearts from selfishness and helps us rely on God’s grace in all that we do.

This month, our classrooms will walk with saints who modeled humility in inspiring ways:

St. John the Baptist (TK–2):
John humbly prepared the way for Jesus, reminding everyone that he was not the Messiah but the one sent to announce His coming. His words, “He must increase; I must decrease,” show us the beauty of stepping aside so that Christ may shine through us.

🙏 St. Pio of Pietrelcina (Grades 3–5):
Known lovingly as Padre Pio, this humble Capuchin friar lived a life of prayer, simplicity, and compassion. Despite his miraculous gifts, Padre Pio always pointed others toward God, teaching that true greatness comes from obedience and love.

🌸 St. Thérèse of Lisieux (Grades 6–8):
Through her “Little Way,” St. Thérèse showed that holiness is found in doing small things with great love. Her humility was rooted in total trust in God’s mercy and in recognizing that even our smallest acts can be beautiful when done for Him.

As we learn from these saints, may we also grow in the virtue of humility—seeing ourselves truthfully, serving others joyfully, and giving glory to God in all things.

✝️ Prayer:
Lord, You are gentle and humble of heart. Teach us to see ourselves as You see us—to rejoice in our gifts, accept our weaknesses, and trust completely in Your grace. May we grow in humility this month, learning to love You and others with pure and faithful hearts. Amen.
