From the Desk of the Principal......February 10, 2026

We are so grateful to Dr. Nanda for visiting our classrooms to provide oral health presentations and dental screenings for our students. These experiences support the well-being of our children and help reinforce healthy habits in a caring and educational way. We truly appreciate Dr. Nanda’s time and generosity.

As we move through this week, our campus is filled with excitement and joyful anticipation. Students are looking forward to our Valentine’s Day classroom parties and the Middle School Valentine’s Dance, both wonderful opportunities to celebrate friendship, kindness, and community.

February is also Black History Month, a time when we honor and reflect on the lives, contributions, and faith of Black leaders who have shaped our nation and our Church. As a school community, we recognize that we are a wonderful mosaic, made richer by the unique gifts and stories of each person. Together, we celebrate the contributions of all peoples who form the beautiful tapestry of America.

This month’s virtue, Cheerfulness, is especially present in all we do this week. Cheerfulness invites us to choose joy, show kindness, and bring light to others through our words and actions. Whether we are sharing a Valentine, dancing with friends, or learning about our shared history, we are reminded that a cheerful heart reflects God’s love.

Thank you for helping us make this a joyful and meaningful week for our students. Our OLA community truly shines when we come together in faith, learning, and celebration.

Rules of the heart

In the reading from Mark’s Gospel we are reminded how the Pharisees try to trick and test Jesus as to his understanding of the Law. Jesus replies, quoting the biblical prophet, Isaiah,

These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.

Jesus upbraids the Pharisees, telling them that they have let go of the commands of God and are holding onto human traditions. He exposes their hypocrisy when they attempt to ridicule the disciples for not washing their hands and suggest that this is a ritual defilement. What Jesus sees is publicly pious people following strict but unimportant human rules rather than the expansive and inviting rules of the heart wherein God resides. The Pharisees model mere short-term lip service, whereas Jesus is teaching about enduring faithful service in God’ name.

Cheerfulness is the friend and helper of all good graces with a boy with hands raisedVirtue of the Month: Cheerfulness

Cheerfulness – Choosing joy and a positive spirit, even in difficult moments

Our virtue for this month is Cheerfulness, a joyful disposition rooted in faith and trust in God. True cheerfulness is more than simply being happy—it is a choice to bring light, kindness, and hope to others, even when circumstances are challenging. As Catholics, we are called to reflect the joy of Christ in our words, actions, and attitudes. When we practice cheerfulness, we become living witnesses of God’s love in our school community and beyond.

Throughout the month, students will learn about saints who lived this virtue in remarkable ways, showing us that joy can be a powerful expression of faith.

Communion of Saints Tapastry

Saints of the Month by Grade Level

This month, our students will focus on the virtue of Cheerfulness, learning that joy is a gift from God meant to be shared. Cheerfulness helps us show kindness, spread hope, and reflect God’s love in our words and actions—especially when things don’t go our way.

St. John Bosco (PK–Grade 2)

St. John Bosco loved children and believed that learning should be filled with joy, laughter, and kindness. He helped children feel safe, valued, and loved, always encouraging them with a cheerful heart. Students will learn that being cheerful—smiling, sharing, and being kind—helps make school a happy place for everyone.

St. Philip Neri (Grades 3–5)

St. Philip Neri is known as the Saint of Joy. He believed that cheerfulness helps us grow closer to God and to one another. He used humor, kindness, and joy to teach others about God’s love. Students will learn that choosing a cheerful attitude, even during challenges, can bring light and happiness to those around them.

Blessed Miguel Pro (Grades 6–8)

Blessed Miguel Pro showed true cheerfulness during very difficult times. Even when practicing his faith was dangerous, he trusted God and remained joyful and courageous. Middle school students will reflect on how cheerfulness can be a sign of strong faith—choosing hope, courage, and joy even when life is hard.
