Virtue of the Month

Hope: The 3 Things needed to Grow and Thrive | SCA

Our school  participates in a Deanery wide program which highlights a particular virtue of the month along with particular Saints for each grade level - Grades PK - 2 St. Joseph, Grades 3 - 5 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and Grades 6 - 8 Sts. Louis & Zelie Martin.   The virtue for this year is Hope and the theme for this year is Study.

During this year, we want to grow in hope. Hope is a gift from God by which we trust in Jesus Christ, that He will keep His promises and help us through difficulties on our journey to Heaven. The virtue of hope responds to the desire for happiness which God has placed in the heart of every person. Hope, which is not merely optimism, never disappoints. Let’s take a closer look.

What is hope?

“Hope is a theological virtue which means that this gift comes from God and leads us back to God. We receive the gift of hope from God in Baptism. Hope allows the possibility for Christians to trust in God, especially with things that seem difficult or impossible to receive, such as salvation. (See John 11:25-26)

The theological virtue of hope is the power by which we desire the Kingdom of Heaven as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the grace of the Holy Spirit. Jesus will give us the graces that we need for the journey to Heaven.

St John Chrysostom

1 Corinthians 12:12-14, 27-31.

We are his people: the sheep of his flock – Psalm 99(100). Luke 7:11-17.

When the Lord saw her, he felt sorry for her

The Gospels occasionally tell us that Jesus responds from the depths of human compassion. On seeing the widow, Jesus responds not from a sense of practicality, but from human concern.

Jesus is different from Greek or Roman gods. Mythological stories of pagan gods show them as capricious, ambitious, villainous and vain. But the God of Jesus Christ, embodied in the person of Jesus, is an incarnational God who embraces the pain and joy of our human experience.

Because of the Incarnation, Jesus responds compassionately to the childless widow’s grief. Jesus’ compassion gives life.
